Size of the Sleeping Area – This is the length and width of the sleeping area where the mattress is placed.
Overall Size – This is the overall length and width of the bed. It is larger than the sleeping area and accommodates medical equipment.
Maximum Weight – This specification informs you of the maximum weight the bed is meant to hold.

Wheels – The wheels enable the movement of the bed within the facility or in the room. The wheels can be locked for safety and traction while shifting the patient form the bed or in it.
Mattress –
Most hospital beds use an innerspring mattress like regular mattresses and ideal for patients who spend more time in bed. This is because of the air cells in the mattresses that can be inflated or deflated to prevent the development of bed sores and relieve pressure
Elevation –
The bed can be raised and lowered along with its entire height, at the head or the feet. In the manual beds, this is done using cranks which are usually at the base or the foot of the bed. In electronic beds, these features and more are controlled by remote or wired controls. These elevations are achieved using motors. Some may have two motors while others may have four. In semi-electronic beds, there are two motors. While one is used for raising the head, the other is engaged to raise the foot. The raised head is also known as the Fowler’s position facilitates both the patient and staff. The Fowler position helps hold the patient upright to feed them, ease breathing and other activities. Raised feet may help with fractures, and ease the move the patient towards the headboard. Raising and lower the bed facilitates the caregiving personnel to do their job comfortably and without strain on the back, legs and feet. For example; it is easier to administer a sponge bath to a patient when the bed is raised.

This feature on the bed allows the nursing station to monitor the patients from a distance. The bed has a pressure pad in the mattress that triggers an audible alert when the weight on the mattress is removed. This is very useful when a memory-impaired senior wanders off unsupervised. The person may be vision-impaired too and this may cause accidents that could be prevented by such a feature. The alarm can be emitted from the bed or it can be connected to the nurse’s pager, light, call bell, paging or phone system. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Function –
