Materials Used in Modern Twin Mattresses

Latex foam is usually a blend of synthetic latex produced from petrochemicals and latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree. Latex foam is produced by Dunlop or Talalay process. Memory foam overlays firmer polyurethane foam with a conforming viscoelastic foam. Foam mattresses and innerspring mattresses use this foam in the upholstery layer. Varying thicknesses, formulations and weights of viscoelastic and base foams such as latex and memory foam are used to achieve different comfort levels and feels in a mattress. They are used for orthopaedic purposes too. Memory foam is affected by temperature thus it will be softer when warm and firmer when cool. This property helps it conform to your body contours. Fast response memory foams spring back when the weight is shifted.
High-density foam is more compact and made of PU. This foam has open cells that are packed together tightly. Mattresses that combine this foam with an innerspring system eliminate sagging and last longer.
Innerspring mattresses consist of a core made of coils with a bottom and top layer of upholstery. The core supports the body and is made of springs or steel coils. The gauge of these steel coils determines the support and firmness which is measured in quarter increments. The firmness is in inverse proportion to the thickness of the spring. High-quality mattresses use 14- or 15.5-gauge coils of 1.63 – 1.37 mm in diameter. They give easily under pressure as compared to 12.5-gauge coils with a diameter of 1.94 mm. The thicker the coil the firmer the mattress.
Coils – There are 4 types of coils used;
Bonnell coils are steel springs are round-topped, hourglass shaped and knotted at the top. They are laced together
Offset coils are hourglass shaped springs where the top and bottom convolutions are flattened. These flat parts are linked by helical wires to give a resilient continuity that conforms to the body contours.
Continuous coils are rows of coils made from a single continuous wire.
Encased coils also known as Marshall coils or pocket springs are barrel-shaped, thin-gauge knotless coils individually encased in a pocket made of a non-woven manmade fabric. As the springs are not wired together, they work independently of each other cutting out the motion transfer.
The upholstery layers offer comfort and cushioning. It consists of three parts – the lower insulator layer, the middle upholstery and the topmost quilt.
The insulator separates the coil core from the middle layer of upholstery. It is made of mesh or fibre to keep the middle upholstery in place.
The middle upholstery comprises of all the material between the insulator and top quilted layer. These materials may be flexible convoluted “egg-crate” foam, cotton, viscoelastic foam, etc.
The quilt is made of light fabric or foam stitched to the underside of the ticking.
