Take the 1000 thread count sheet as an example. One square inch of the sheet can consist of 250 warp threads and 250 weft threads, with each thread having two plies. With basic math, 250 threads in both vertical and horizontal orientation give us a total of 500, and multiplying it by two plies gives us the thread count of – you guessed it – 1000.
So basically, in considering getting a high thread count sheet, you would still need to take into account the number of plies for which a single thread or yarn is made up of. The given example brings into logic that you can still have lower warp and weft threads and still get the same thread count, just by using multi-ply threads. Two or more plies in a thread can generally mean a thicker yarn diameter, but this all well depends on the consistency of the diameter as well.
Consistency of the yarn
It sounds like a pretty obvious thing to check, but the consistency of the yarn – particularly the diameter – is also one huge factor to take a keen look at. This may well depend on how the plies in a thread are done; basically speaking, if the plies are not uniformly twisted together, this can most definitely result to inconsistency in the diameter of the yarn.
